The Cwn Annwn by ~AutumnEstuary

In Welsh mythology, the Cŵn Annwn are the white bodied, red eared hounds of the Welsh otherworld, Annwn. In the first branch of the Mabinogi, they are Arawn’s hunting dogs, but they are usually associated with a form of the Wild Hunt presided over by Gwyn ap Nudd

The baying of the hunting Cŵn Annwn is said to be loudest when they are far away, becoming quieter and quieter as they approach.

Well that sure sounds familiar…

Sounds like the statues of Inari’s fox messengers that flank his-and-her shrines…

Tamamo no Mae collage illustration. The story tells of a beautiful kitsune-possessed courtesan (Tamamo no Mae) that Emperor Konoe had fallen in love with. However, she was under the control of a daimyo and was forced to turn the Emperor ill in a devious plot to help the evil daimyo take the throne. Outraged, the Emperor sent out his most powerful warriors, Kazusa no suke and Miura no suke to hunt and kill the fox. After spending some time eluding the hunters, Tamamo no Mae approached Miura no suke in a dream and prophesied that Miura-no-suke would kill her the next day, and begged for her life. Miura-no-suke refused and as prophesied, killed the fox.
